Student Assistance Program Referrals/Sanctions

Students receiving a referral or sanction from a residence hall, Office of Student Conduct, or Magistrate Court should have their sanction paperwork ready when they call to schedule their first session.

All fees are due at the time of the initial assessment (an individual appointment with a counselor). Initial assessments must be attended and all fees paid before students will be allowed to attend group counseling sessions.

Students interested in receiving alcohol or other drug counseling may contact SAP to schedule an appointment. Self-referrals are welcomed. Students who seek SAP services are required to participate in an intake/evaluation by the SAP staff.

Since each individual’s needs are different, a referral may be made to one or more of the following:

Services within WELLWVU Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services:

- Individual Counseling

- Group Counseling or Psychoeducational Groups

- Consultation or medication management with psychiatric staff

Online Programs:


- AlcoholEdu for Sanctions

Services outside of WELLWVU Carruth Center:

- 12 Step Program (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Al-Anon)

- In-patient hospitalization
