Fighting Procrastination Why Not Start Today?

Fighting Procrastination Why Not Start Today?

Take a close look at your schedule and how you spend your time—are you being as efficient as you could be? We all have unique procrastination habits that sneak up on us. The trick is to see them coming so you can prevent major time-wasting activities.

Here are some tips for putting an end to procrastination:

  1. Know your habits. What are the major time-wasters for you? E-mail? Web-surfing? Television? Twirling your hair and staring off into space? Once you recognize your procrastination habits, it will be much easier to identify—and put a stop to—the moments when you’re just wasting time.
  2. Get enough sleep. One of your strongest defenses against procrastination is a regular sleep schedule. When you’re well rested, you have the energy and alertness required to focus on the task at hand, and you’re less likely to drift into time-wasting habits.
  3. Prioritize. You may be putting off the difficult tasks or the tasks you feel least comfortable with. Encourage yourself to tackle those first, when you have the most energy.
  4. Make it sacred. If you set aside time on your calendar to study, make sure you do it! Try to study at the same time everyday, whenever you feel your mind is the freshest. When study becomes a routine, it’s much easier to dive into it.
  5. Team up. A good way to keep on task is to be accountable to someone else. Join a study group or arrange regular meetings with a tutor to improve your commitment to your work. Knowing that your work will support someone else, or be reviewed by someone else, is a strong motivator.
